__1. The first covenant---will.
____Heb. 9:1. "Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary."
____Heb. 9:18. "Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood."
__2. The second covenant---will.
____Heb. 8:6. "But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises."
____Heb. 7:22. "By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament."
II. When Two Wills Are Made Only The Last One Is Valid And The First Must Pass Away.
____Rom. 10:4. "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth."
____Gal. 3:22-26. 22, But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
23, But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
24, Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25, But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
26, For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
____Heb. 8:13. "In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away."
III. A Will Is Not In Force Until The Death Of The Testator.
____Heb. 9:16, 17. 16, For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
17, For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
IV. The First Will Was Faulty, While The Last One Is Perfect.
__1. In the first or old will we find the following defects.
____(a) It was dedicated with the blood of animals.
______Ex. 24:6, 7. 6, And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.
7, And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient.
______Heb. 9:18-22. 18, Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.
19, For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,
20, Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.
21, Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.
22, And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
____(b) The inheritance it promised was too scanty to free the heirs from sin.
______Heb. 10:4, 11. 4, For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
11, And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
____(c) It couldn't make perfect.
______Heb. 10:1. "For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect."
______Heb. 7:19. "For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God."
____(d) Their sins were remembered once a year.
______Heb. 10:3. "But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year."
______Heb. 9:7. "But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:"
____(e) I couldn't give life.
______Gal. 3:21. "Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law."
______Gal. 2:21. "I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain."
____(f) It was only a temporary will.
______Gal. 3:19. "Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator."
__2. The last will is perfect and superior to the first for the following reasons.
____(a) It's dedicated with the blood of Jesus.
______Heb. 9:13, 14. 13, For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
14, How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
______1 Pet. 1:18, 19. 18, Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19, But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
______Heb. 13:12. "Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate."
____(b) The inheritance promised is sufficient to free the heirs from all sin.
______1 John 1:7. "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."
______John 8:36. "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed."
______Rom. 6:22. "But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life."
____(c) It brings perfection.
______Heb. 7:19. "For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God."
______Mat. 5:48. "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
______Heb. 10:14. "For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified."
____(d) Our sins are remembered no more.
______Heb. 10:17. "And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more."
______Heb. 8:12. "For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more."
____(e) It gives life in abandance.
______John 6:63. "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life."
______John 10:10. "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."
______Rom. 8:2. "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."
____(f) It's an everlasting covenant.
______Heb. 13:20. "Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,"
V. In His Last Will God Has Willed Us The Following Unsearchable Riches.
__1. Repentance unto life.
____2 Pet. 3:9. "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."
____Rom. 2:4. "Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?"
____1 Tim. 2:3, 4. 3, For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
4, Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
__2. Justification.
____Rom 5:1. "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:"
____Rom. 3:24-26. 24, Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
25, Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
26, To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
__3. Sanctification.
____1 Thes. 4:3. "For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:"
____1 Thes. 5:23, 24. 23, And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24, Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
__4. The healing of our bodies.
____Mark 16:16-18. 16, He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17, And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18, They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
____Jas. 5:14, 15. 14, Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
15, And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
__5. All things with Christ.
____Rom. 8:31, 32. 31, What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
32, He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
__6. An eternal home with him when he shall come again.
____John 14:1-4. 1, Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
2, In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3, And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
4, And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
____1 Thes. 4:16, 17. 16, For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17, Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
____2 Cor. 5:1, 2. 1, For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2, For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
____1 Pet. 1:3-5. 3, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
5, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
