"Peace I leave with you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." John 14:27
My husband John and I loved each other very much but... there were times when "disagreements" appeared in our relationship. I am one that wants to drive in, talk it over and clear the air. John would throw a few unkind words my way and then clam up. When I would throw my usual punch of "well just what do you want!" His response was always the same: "Some peace and quiet!" followed by silence. I would feel totally beaten up and no way to heal my wounds.
That of course is not what Jesus had in mind when He promised to give us peace. Too often we pair up the words peace and quiet. I think that is why He followed His statement with, "not as the world gives." When we dive in and try to work out our troubled times between ourselves by wanting to know what the other one wants, it only leads to troubled hearts and fear. Both parties need to know what the Lord wants and He is always ready to talk it over. It's called prayer. JM
