I. Concerning Patience.
__1. God is a God of patience.
____Rom. 15:5. "Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:"
__2. Christ is set forth as an example of patience.
____Isa. 53:3, 4, 7. 3, He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
____4, Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
____7, He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
____Mat. 27:12-14. 12, And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
____13, Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?
____14, And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
__3. The prophets and saints of past ages are set forth as examples of patience.
____Jas. 5:10. "Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience."
__4. Let patience have her perfect work.
____Jas. 1:4. "But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing."
__5. Patience produces experience.
____Rom. 5:4. "And patience, experience; and experience, hope:"
__6. Patience produces hope.
____Rom. 15:4. "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope."
__7. To suffer with patience for well-doing is acceptable with God.
____1 Pet. 2:20. "For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God."
II. Patience May Be Increased
__1. By constant exercise.
____2 Pet. 1:5-8. 5, And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
____6, And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
____7, And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
____8, For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
__2. By passing through deep trials.
____Rom. 5:3. "And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;"
____Jas. 1:3. "Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience."
III. Patience Should Be Exercised
__1. In running the Christian race.
____Heb. 12:1. "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,"
__2. In bringing forth fruit.
____Luke 8:15. "But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience."
__3. In well-doing
____Gal. 6:9. "And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not."
__4. In waiting for Christ.
____2 Thes. 3:5. "And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ."
__5. In tribulation.
____Rom. 12:12. "Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;"
IV. Patience Should Be Accompanied
__1. By faith.
____2 Thes. 1:4. "So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:"
__2. With joyfulness.
____Col. 1:11. "Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;"
V. Miscellaneous.
__1. We must be patient toward all men.
____1 Thes. 5:14. "Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men."
