"It Is Written...It Is Finished!"
by Wayne Stokes

These are very important words that we read in our Bible. In all these scriptures written below the word written is the same Greek word: grapho - to grave, to write, to discribe, write (-ing, -ten), etch. In each of these scriptures we read the same meaning... it was written, someone already wrote it. Here they are of course speaking of it being written in God's Word.

Matthew 2:5; 4: 4,6,7,10; 21:13
Mark 1:2; 7:6; 9:12,13; 11:17; 14:27
Luke 2:23; 3:4; 4:4,8,10; 19:46; 24:46
John 2:17; 6:31,45; 8:17; 10:34; 12:14; 20:31
Acts 1:20; 7:24; 13:33; 15:15; 23:5
Romans 1:17; 2:24; 3:4,10; 4:17; 8:36; 9:13,33; 10:15; 11:8,26; 12:19; 14:11; 15:3,4,9,21
I Corinthians 1:19,31; 3:19; 5:11; 9:9,10; 14:21; 15:45,54
II Corinthians 4:13; 8:15; 9:9
Galatians 3:10,13; 4:22,27
I Peter 1:16

Below we find some scriptures that have the word "finish" in them. Here are which verses have the word "finish" with what it means in that verse.

These numbers found in the parenthesis after the scriptures below are the numbers under which the definition is found in Strong's Greek Hebrew Dictionary.

Matthew 13:53; 19:1; 26:1 (5055)
John 17:4 (5048); 19:30 (5055)
Acts 21:7 (1274)
II Timothy 4:7 5055)
Hebrews 4:3 (1096)
James 1:15 (658)
Revelation 10:7; 11:7; 20:5 (5055)

5055 teleo - to end, complete, execute, conclude, discharge (a debt), accomplish, make an end, expire, fill up, finish, go over, pay, From: telos - which is from: tello - (to set out for a definite point or goal), the point aimed at as a limit. the conclusion of an act or state (termination), result, purpose, an impost or levy (as paid), + continuous, custom, end (-ing), finally, uttermost. Compared to: phoros - a load (as borne), a tax, assessment on persons or property, whereas as "telos" is generally (a toll on goods or travel), a tribute. From: enegko - to "bear" or carry, bring (forth), carry, come, be driven, endure, go on, lay, lead, move, reach, rushing, uphold.

In John 19:30 Jesus said; "It is finished." This word is 5055 teleo. Look at the depth of what that word means. Jesus was saying that the mission He came to carry out was finished, it was teleo. Not simply finished as we would use as "I finished work and went home" or "The movie was finished" or "I finished my meal." Jesus' mission, His work of redemption, His paying the ransom for sin and destroying its power and hold over you and me was indeed once and for all finished. It was ended, executed, the debt had been discharged, He made an end of it, sin's reign had expired. Jesus set out for a definite point or goal and He met it. He set full redemption as the limit. It was the termination, the conclusion of sin and the state of sin. The result was He paid in full the levy or impost. There is no limit on the fulness of what He paid...His sacrifice, His blood pays the price continually, finally and to the uttermost. It was the load, the tax, the assessment, etc. that He paid that was owed for our sin. He came to bear it, to carry it away, to bring forth freedom. He came to endure it, to go on, to lead and move us into something better and He did it so it would be upheld and never end. This was all down to purchase us back from sin as a tribute to His Father.

We need to live our lives as Jesus and His desciples did. When the enemy of souls comes around with all his troubles, trials, and tribulations trying to tear us down, wear us down and cause us to get discouraged and quit...we must answer with...it is written, and quote the scripture or scriptures that pertains to what we are going through. I am not talking about mind over matter and positive thinking or any crazy superstitions and such. Face the enemy with the Word of God and a heart full of faith. This is not a talisman, some kind of good luck charm or something. It is standing in faith believing upon the Word of God. We really need to surround ourselves with the Word. Then after you stand firm in the Word of God remind yourself and the devil that Jesus did indeed say that "It is finished." He said that because it was. There was and is nothing else that can be added to our salvation, our redemption, that can make it better, more efficient, last longer or whatever. It is done, it is complete! It is written and it is finished! And you have God's Word on it. Hallelujah!
